Tapping the Energies of the Earth
The density of chi is dramtically higher in the world of nature than the world created by man; thus we can understand the statement regarding the much greater ease of performing wall squats beside a mature tree rather than indoors, due to the ambient chi field emanating from the tree and augmenting our own field. This is a distinct and pronounced phenomenon which can easily be experienced by any sensitive practitioner with relatively little effort. Chi emanates omnidirectionally from the
greater universe, but it is most palpably experienced as it issues upward from the earth, downward from heaven, and outward from manifest forms and beings. There are many Taoist practices designed which effectively enhance and augment this man-nature synergy.
A simple, yet potent practice for the restoration of depleted energies or simply the healthful augmentation of one's normal field is to lie upon the ground, preferably over grass, moss or other low vegetation, relaxing one's tensions, and to quietly rest, breathing softly, while gently maintaining the intention of opening and expanding one's field into the greater field of the earth. An immediate process of subtle recharging begins to occur, with energetic and neurological imbalances and excesses coming into equalization, overstimulated areas becoming pacified, and overly intense psychospiritual states dissolving into peaceful awareness.
Should the student find herself in an especially disturbed state, and unable to easily release compulsive thinking or powerful emotions, and to simply yield herself to the earth-field, she should lie face down, pouring her every breath and her consciousness itself into the depths of the ground, with the intention of deeply emptying herself of the conflicted inner energies or stresses; this position encourages and allows for very rapid unburdening of psychic and emotional excesses, as well as the implementation of total trust and surrender, followed by the release of overcharged, unelimi-nated forces within the system.
Eventually, if done in earnest, this emptying process will come to a natural closure, with a simultaneous sense of relief on all levels, and one will no longer feel inclined to remain in the prone position. It is then time to turn onto one's back and to allow the refilling or recharging process to naturally occur. After a time, the body will instinctually feel like moving, stretching and eventually rising as its reserves and inner balance are replenished.
