Cultivating a deep Zhineng Qigong consciousness

a. Enhance one's study of the theories of Zhineng Qigong.

The purpose of chigong practice is not merely physical movement, but also the transformation of the mind through self-cultivation, and the enhancing of the mind's ability to direct the body. A profound energy-sensitive consciousness must be established in order to achieve beneficial effects.

Most people possess no chigong consciousness within their minds. When chigong is mentioned, they may superficially evaluate it according to their own scientific knowledge. Such an approach will rob chi of its vital, flexible and self-sufficient qualities, causing it to play only a limited role within the body.

Only when one studies the theories, impresses one's mind with the deep imprint of chigong, and establishes a chigong field within one's consciousness, will one be able to conscientiously practice in accordance with those theories, and to study things according to the laws and principles of chigong. As soon as an energy-sensitive consciousness is created and formed into a habit, one may become capable of directing one's own unconscious and subconscious life processes.

The theories of Zhineng Qigong can, in a unique way, help both the sick and the healthy, as well as those who want to develop various special abilities, to obtain their desired goals. Only by understanding both the theories and the methods of Zhineng Qigong can one better experience their essence in one's practice.

We may not understand what we are experiencing and sensing, but we can perform the practice better when we understand why we are performing it. This principle is of special importance in Zhineng Qigong practice.

b. Create a Zhineng Qigong consciousness through practice.

This point is as important as the study of theory. In order to deeply root the theories in one's mind, and to build up a true chigong consciousness, one should plunge oneself deeply and consistently into practice.

c. Practice at a fixed time and place.

Work out a schedule (time, place, and practice curricula) and do not change it no matter what may happen (bad weather, fatigue, sickness, or anything else). If one can continue practicing even under unfavorable circumstances, a great power of will can gradually be cultivated, and this will enhance one's spiritual power in directing the body and the life processes overall.

The practice of Zhineng Qigong must not be confined only to the cultivation of chi, for the essential principle involved is the tempering both of one's mind and of one's willpower. Practicing at a fixed time and place will help achieve this effect.

In addition, this is also helpful in forming a chi field - something which is of additional importance for those who may practice alone. A further benefit of so doing is that one's chi can be blended with that of one's surroundings to form a unified field of chi.

d. Putting chigong practice into one's daily life.

It is not required that one cultivate chi all day long, but it is required that one implement the essence of chigong in one's daily life, work and studies.

First, extend the qualities of chigong practice into one's daily life: always maintain an attitude that is peaceful, relaxed and comfortable. Second, incorporate the various chigong movements into one's daily life wherever one is and whenever one can. Third, maintain an energy-sensitive spirit and frame of mind in one's daily life - keep calm and tranquil even in the face of irritation and disturbance; this forms the focus of yet a higher level practice.

e. Live a chigong life.

This implies embodying the essential spirit of chigong in one's daily life, work and studies, and governing the activities of daily living while maintaining an energy-cultivation consciousness.

First, permeate one's daily life with a chigong consciousness. The essential point of chigong practice is to merge the mental (spiritual) activities with the movements of the body, so that one's entire life is actively informed by and permeated with the presence of chi.

In addition, one should always maintain an awareness of being a Zhineng Qigong practitioner. One should seek to make various contributions to Zhineng Qigong; in this way one can be easily connected with the powerful chi field of Zhineng Qigong and can make rapid progress.

Second, pay attention to the rhythms and dynamics of the world of nature, discern their principles of function, and follow these laws in order to enhance one's own vitality.

Third, try to understand the implications of chigong in various Chinese idioms and words, such as "Hunyuan Ling Tongl", "tong," and "song."

17. The meaning of "Hunyuan Ling Tong!"

"Hunyuan Ling Tong!" is the most frequently repeated saying for all Chinese Zhineng Qigong practitioners. Hun means to blend and transform, yuan means one; thus, Hunyuan means to blend and transform, becoming one or a whole. This saying refers to the original Hunyuan chi. That is to say: to be blended, transformed and to become one with the original Hunyuan chi.

Ling means effective - Hunyuan chi works. Tong means open, unobstructed and throughgoing. It indicates that Hunyuan chi can fill the whole body without being obstructed; it functions as one wishes so long as one can blend one's body and mind with it and become one with it. This is one of the tasks and goals of Zhineng Qigong practice. It is also a very good high-level practice method - a practice of mind cultivation.

The pronunciations of the last two words ling and tong can also vibrate the middle and upper vital centers. So it is better to pronounce this saying correctly in standard Mandarin Chinese. While its effect is essentially vibrational in nature, and on that level independent of linguistic or cognitive meaning, it does possess a psychological and spiritual resonance as well, due to its ability to empower one's faith and to focus and enhance one's awareness, thereby simultaneously heightening one's inner perception of the chi-flow in direct proportion to the purity of one's concentration.
